Borrowed from French preux, from Old French prod, prud, or prous, meaning 'good, capable, or valiant.' The Old French forms are related to Late Latin prode, 'useful or advantageous.' English retains the French pronunciation and uses the word chiefly in literary descriptions and in the phrase preux chevalier.
