   chiefly Western US, informal: to pay or contribute money, usually reluctantly and often with up

   Pap said he would make the judge pungle or demand an explanation.

Borrowed in the mid-nineteenth century from Spanish pongale, 'put it down,' an imperative expression based on poner, 'to put.' It first referred to putting down a stake in gambling, then broadened to paying or contributing money.
