Simplified etymology

Quince was originally a plural form of Middle English coyn or quyne, reshaped from forms such as quynse. It came through Old French cooin from Latin malum cotoneum, a variant of malum Cydonium, “Cydonian apple,” named for Cydonia in Crete, now Chania.

From Middle English quynce, a plural reinterpreted as singular, from Old French cooin or coing, from Latin cotoneum, in malum Cydonium, 'Cydonian apple.' The name referred to Cydonia in ancient Crete, associated with the fruit in Greek and Roman tradition.
