   A later critic tried to recoin the term with a more favorable meaning.

Formed from re-, 'again,' + coin. Coin came through Old French coigne, 'wedge or stamping die,' from Latin cuneus, 'wedge.' Recoin first referred to striking money anew and later also applied to inventing an expression again.
