Formed from re- ('again') + coinage. Coin came through Old French coing, originally 'wedge' and then a die for stamping money, from Latin cuneus, 'wedge.' Recoinage is the reminting or replacement of a currency's coins, often after wear, clipping, debasement, or a change of standard.
