Formed from savage + -ery. Savage came through Middle English and Old French sauvage from Late Latin salvaticus, a variant of Latin silvaticus, "of the woods, wild," from silva, "woodland." Savagery developed from wildness to denote ferocious violence or extreme cruelty.
