From French barbarité and Latin barbaritās, 'foreignness, uncivilized condition,' from barbarus, 'foreign or barbarous,' ultimately Greek barbaros. As barbarian shifted from 'foreigner' to 'uncivilized or cruel person,' barbarity developed its modern emphasis on brutal cruelty.
