Borrowed in the nineteenth century from Mexican Spanish estampida, 'a sudden rush or uproar,' related to Spanish estampido, 'a crash or bang.' Those forms trace through Old Occitan to a Germanic verb meaning 'to stamp.' The English verb developed from the noun.
