Borrowed from Latin tintinnabulum, 'bell,' from tintinnare, 'to ring or tinkle,' an imitative reduplicated formation, plus an instrument-forming suffix. English kept the object sense and also used the resonant Latin word for a mingled ringing or tinkling sound.
