Simplified etymology

Vanguard came into Middle English from French avan(t)guard, meaning “the foremost division of an army.” In the 17th century it was shortened to van.

Earlier forms included vandgard and (a)vantgard with or without aphetism, derived from Old French avan(t)garde (“before guard”). Doublet of avant-garde and vaward.
