Etymology

A nineteenth-century back-formation from vivisection, modeled on dissect. Vivisection combines Latin vivus ("alive") with sectio ("a cutting"), from secare ("to cut"). The word therefore denotes cutting into a living organism rather than an ordinary dissection of a dead one.
