Simplified etymology

Wold is an Old English word for wooded upland and probably comes from the same root as wild.

From Middle English wald or wold and Old English weald ("forest or wooded highland"), from a Germanic word also seen in German Wald. In English the landscape sense shifted from wooded high ground to open rolling upland; weald is a doublet.
