Etymology

From Middle English wood sorrel, a compound distinguishing the woodland herb from true sorrels of the genus Rumex. Sorrel came through Anglo-French surele, a diminutive of sur, 'sour,' referring to the sharp taste produced by oxalic acid in the leaves.
