   The doctor described the patient's appetite as zoophagous because he consumed living animals.

Formed from zoo-, from Greek zoion, "animal or living being," + -phagous, from Greek phagein, "to eat." Literally "animal-eating," the rare zoological adjective was used by Bram Stoker in Dracula for Renfield's life-consuming behavior.
