   When threatened by the dog, the apar rolled itself into a hard ball.

Borrowed through Portuguese or American Spanish from Tupi tatuapara, 'armadillo that rolls up,' from tatu, 'armadillo,' plus a verb meaning 'to roll.' Darwin also records the regional name mataco.
