Etymology
A learned borrowing from Latin bacillus ("little staff or wand"), a diminutive of baculum ("stick, staff"). Microbiologists applied the word to rod-shaped bacteria because their cells resemble tiny rods. The taxonomic genus Bacillus retains a capital letter.
