Etymology
From Japanese ginkyo, from Chinese yinxing ("silver apricot"). Engelbert Kaempfer printed the form Ginkgo in 1712, apparently through a transcription or printing error; Linnaeus later adopted it as the botanical name, fixing the unusual spelling in European usage.
