Borrowed in the sixteenth century from Spanish brocado and Italian broccato ("embossed cloth"), originally the past participle of broccare ("to stud"). That verb came from brocco ("small nail"), ultimately Latin broccus ("projecting, pointed"), an image preserved in the fabric's raised design.
