From Middle English cedre, probably through Old French cedre from Latin cedrus and Greek kedros. The ancient names referred to aromatic coniferous trees and their wood. English later extended cedar beyond true Cedrus species to several fragrant or visually similar trees, including some junipers, cypresses, and members of the mahogany family.
