   the constricted region of a chromosome where the kinetochore forms and sister chromatids remain joined during cell division

   Spindle fibers attach near the centromere before the chromatids separate.

Borrowed from German Centromer, formed from centro- ("center") + -mere, from Greek meros ("part"). Although a kinetochore assembles at the centromere, the two structures are not identical.
