   The sacristan laid a white chalice veil over the prepared vessel.

A liturgical compound of chalice and veil. Chalice came through Old French from Latin calix, 'cup'; veil came through Anglo-Norman and Old French from Latin velum, 'covering, curtain, or sail.' The open spelling is now usual, while the hyphenated chalice-veil is well attested historically.
