Etymology

A compound of candle and shade. The closed spelling candleshade is attested from the late nineteenth century, including in The Picture of Dorian Gray; candle-shade is an established hyphenated alternative. The object was named for its parallel with a lampshade: it screened glare and could tint the candlelight.
