   Chlorophyll absorbs mainly red and blue light during photosynthesis.

Borrowed from French chlorophylle, coined from Greek khloros ("pale green, greenish yellow") + phyllon ("leaf"). The name literally evokes "green leaf" and was applied to the pigments responsible for plants' green color and light absorption.
