From French cognac, named for Cognac in western France, the center of the brandy's legally defined production region. The place name comes through Occitan Conhac and Medieval Latin Comniacum, probably from the Roman personal name Cominius plus the Gallo-Roman place-name suffix -acum. The lower-case beverage name developed by association with its origin.
