Simplified etymology

Commemoration entered English in the late Middle English period and ultimately derives from Latin memor, “mindful.” It belongs to the same historical family as memory, remember, and reminisce.

From Middle English commemoracioun, through Old French, from Latin commemoratio, 'a calling to mind,' from commemorare, 'to remember or remind.' The Latin verb combines com-, used intensively, with memor, 'mindful or remembering.'
