Etymology
Coined in mineralogy from Greek kyma, 'wave,' + -phane, 'appearing or showing,' for the floating, wavelike band of light seen in the stone. Rene Just Hauy applied the name to chatoyant chrysoberyl around the end of the eighteenth century.
