   A solitary ombu shaded the ranch house on the open pampas.

Borrowed from Spanish ombu, from Guarani umbu. Although commonly called a tree, it is a giant arborescent herb related to pokeweed, with unusually soft, water-storing tissue rather than ordinary woody timber.
