   The dichogamous flowers released pollen before their stigmas became receptive.

From dichogamy + -ous. Dichogamy combines Greek dikha ("in two, apart") with gamos ("marriage"). The term describes temporal separation of sexual function: protandry when the male phase comes first and protogyny when the female phase does.
