   Under the old charter, the crown retained a droit over goods recovered from certain wrecks.

Borrowed from French droit, 'right or law,' from Old French dreit and Latin directum, 'what is right,' the neuter of directus, 'straight or direct.' It survives in English chiefly in legal terminology and borrowed French phrases.
