From dropsy + -ical. Dropsy came through Old French idropisie from Late Latin hydropisis and Greek hydrops, 'dropsy,' based on hydor, 'water.' Dropsical was once a medical adjective for fluid retention and survives chiefly in historical or figurative descriptions of swelling.
