   The collection opens with an eclogue in which two shepherds debate the loss of their land.

From Middle English eclog, via Latin ecloga from Greek ekloge, 'selection.' Virgil's Eclogues, a selected collection of pastoral poems, helped narrow the English word from a selected passage or short poem to a poem about idealized rural life.
