Formed from engraft + -ment. Engraft combines en-, 'in or into,' with graft, the name of a shoot inserted into another plant. Graft came through Old French graife, 'stylus or grafting knife,' from Latin graphium; the pointed shoot was likened to a stylus. Ingraftment is a historical spelling variant.
