Flagrant is recorded from the late 15th century and comes from Latin flagrare, meaning “to blaze.” Its early senses, including “glorious” and “blazing,” were positive.

From French flagrant and Latin flagrans, the present participle of flagrare (to blaze or burn). Something flagrant was figuratively blazing before the eyes, which produced the modern sense of an offense too glaring to overlook.
