   The hotel charged two hundred Swiss francs for the room.

Borrowed from French franc. The name was used for a French gold coin minted under John II in 1360 and is associated both with the coin's legend Francorum rex ('king of the Franks') and French franc ('free'). It later became the name of national currencies in France and elsewhere.
