   historical: a tax, especially the compulsory salt tax imposed in pre-Revolutionary France

   The unequal gabelle made salt far more expensive in some French provinces than in others.

Borrowed from French gabelle ('tax'), from Italian gabella, ultimately from Arabic qabala ('guarantee, tax contract'). In France the word became especially associated with the state salt tax.
