Gazette came through French from Italian gazzetta, shortened from Venetian gazeta de la novità, literally “a halfpennyworth of news.” The expression referred to a news-sheet sold for a low-value Venetian coin called a gazeta, and the name of the coin consequently became a word for the publication.
