From Middle English idroforbia, through Latin hydrophobia, from Ancient Greek hydrophobia. The Greek formation combines hydro- ("water") with -phobia ("fear"), from phobos ("fear"). Its historical use for rabies reflects the aversion to swallowing liquids caused by spasms in advanced disease.
