From Middle French infidele, from Latin infidelis ('unfaithful'), formed from in- ('not') + fidelis ('faithful'), the source of fidelity. English narrowed the word from general unfaithfulness to religious unbelief. Because it has often been used contemptuously for outsiders, modern use can be offensive.
