Borrowed from Latin isosceles, from Ancient Greek ἰσοσκελής (isoskelēs, "equal-legged"), formed from ἴσος (isos, "equal") + σκέλος (skelos, "leg") + the adjectival suffix -ής (-ēs). The geometric meaning is therefore literally "having equal legs."
