Etymology

From Italian serraglio, from Vulgar Latin *serraculum ("bolt, enclosure"), from Late Latin serare ("to lock"), itself from sera ("lock, bolt"). The Italian word's use for an Ottoman palace was reinforced by its resemblance to Turkish saray ("palace"); compare serai and serail.
