Simplified etymology

Lime, in the name of the citrus fruit, ultimately derives from Arabic līm, a collective term for citrus fruit. English has used this fruit name since the mid-17th century.

From Old English līm ('sticky substance, birdlime, mortar'), from Proto-Germanic *līmaz, related to Latin līmus ('mud, slime'). The citrus sense is a separate word, from French lime, via Provençal limo from Arabic līma.
