Simplified etymology

Magnet entered English in the late Middle Ages as a name for a naturally magnetic stone, or lodestone. It came through Latin from Greek magnes lithos, the Greek term for a lodestone.

From Latin magnes (genitive magnetis), from Greek Magnes lithos ('stone of Magnesia'), referring to the region of Magnesia in Asia Minor where magnetic ore was found.
