Etymology
Formed in the nineteenth century from meth-, associated with methyl and methanol, + the hydrocarbon suffix -ane. The meth- element ultimately reflects Greek methy, 'wine,' and hyle, 'wood,' because methanol was once obtained from wood distillation.
