Simplified etymology

Mitten entered English in the Middle English period, but its origin is uncertain. It may derive from French mite, a pet name for a cat that probably imitated mewing, because mittens were often made from fur, possibly cat fur. The shortened form mitt appeared in the mid-18th century for a fingerless glove and later came to mean a hand.

From Middle English myteyne, borrowed from Old French mitaine. The French word is of uncertain origin; proposals connect it either with a pet name for a cat or with a Germanic word for 'middle' or 'half.'
