Simplified etymology

Mountebank entered English in the mid-16th century from Italian monta in banco, meaning “climb on the bench.” It referred to a charlatan who mounted a bench or platform to attract a crowd.

From obsolete Italian montambanco, a seller of quack medicines who mounted a bench to address a crowd, from monta in banco, 'mount on the bench.' English broadened the word from an itinerant medicine seller to any showy fraud or pretender.
