Formed from pan- ("all") + harmonic. Pan- comes from Ancient Greek pas, with the stem pan-, while harmonic ultimately comes through Latin harmonicus from Greek harmonikos and harmonia ("joining, agreement, harmony"). In older musical theory, a harmony could mean a mode, giving the word its sense "adapted to all modes."
