   The volcanic cone consisted largely of columnar phonolite.

Borrowed through French phonolithe from German Phonolith, formed from Greek phone, 'sound,' + lithos, 'stone.' It translates German Klingstein, 'ringing stone,' because some slabs of the rock produce a metallic sound when struck.
