   a pion, any of three unstable spin-zero mesons with positive, negative, or zero charge, formed from combinations of up and down quarks and antiquarks

   A charged pi-meson can decay into a muon and a neutrino.

Formed from pi, the name of the Greek letter used in the particles' symbols, + meson. The shorter name pion was created by contracting pi-meson and became the usual modern term.
