   The museum displayed a nearly complete plesiosaurus skeleton from Early Jurassic rock.

From the scientific genus name Plesiosaurus, coined from Ancient Greek plesios ("nearer") + sauros ("lizard"). The name reflected early anatomists' view that the animal was closer than ichthyosaurs were to ordinary reptiles.
