   The diplomats used the private pourparler to identify terms both sides might accept.

Borrowed in the early eighteenth century from French pourparler, from the verb pourparler ("to discuss"). Its older elements are pour ("for or before") + parler ("to speak"), hence a talk held before formal negotiation.
